Mini Vacation at Chikmagalur

It had been a long time since we went for a long drive or a mini vacation. Chikmagalur was a destination we intended to visit from last year itself.

Day 1:
We started the journey around 6am though we wanted to start earlier. The roads were quite good till Belur. We could easily cruise around 110-120km/hr. We had breakfast at a Cafe Kamat nearby Kunigal, much early at around 7.30 itself, as we decided Kamat Yatri Nivas would be late, maybe not for us, but for the kiddo. There was also a Hotel Sahyadri inside a petrol pump, as our second backup restaurant.

We reached around Belur around 10.30, and hence decided to visit the Chenna Keshava temple, and if time permits then proceed to Halebidu.

At the Belur temple, we got hired by a guide for Rs.250/- and he started lecturing about the 48 celestial damsels called madanikas and other sculptures on the outer walls and also within the temple.

After going around the temple for few photos, we got back into the car. I was forced to buy two stone deepams for Rs.100 by the handicraft sellers. By the time we got back into the car, it was already 12.30pm, so we skipped Halebidu and proceeded towards our homestay at Chikmagalur, Thippanahalli Homestay.Continue reading →

If you are in Bangalore this weekend, please visit Venkatappa Art Gallery, Kasturba Road, Bangalore which exhibits three of my selected photos along with 40+ talented photographers. There are 100+ photos being showcased in this exhibition organized by Focus Bangalore. Some of the photos would be put up for sale at an affordable price too.

Beyond Colors Poster

This is the third exhibition organized by Focus Bangalore photography club. The previously held exhibitions, Breathing City in 2012 and Blurred Boundaries in 2013 was a huge success.

Entry is free. Timings from the second day onwards are 11 am to 6pm. The location map is given below.

Black and White Photo Challenge

There are many challenges currently going on in Facebook, among photographers. One of them is the black and white challenge, where you need to post a black and white photo and nominate another friend for five days. Though I do not want to share the nominations here, the black and white photos posted are the below ones.

Day 1:

Mahabalipuram.jpg

The above image is of Shore temple, Mahabalipuram, near Chennai in December 2012. With the kit lens (18-55m) I had, I was not able to get the details of the shore temple. Also, it was either a cloudy day, or we went to the beach very late, almost after sunset. I tried converting to black and white, so as to give a silhouette touch, though I know its not that perfect. It was the first travel we did with the DSLR, Canon 600d, and hence I was not aware of taking landscape photos in RAW images. So considering that its the one of the initial shots, I am happy with it.

Day 2:

way of life

I had posted a photo of my daughter for the second day, but I do not want to share that in the blog. Hence I would chose this abstract image, depicting ways of life.
I had no image containing shadows, to participate in the CCH flickr group. Hence was thinking about how to create one, and sipping my morning tea in my balcony , when I saw the shadows caused by the morning sun and the window grill on the balcony floor tiles. Its amazing how photography can make you form images from the normal mundane things of life. The initial image did not had much contrast as the floor tiles were white. The paths in different directions, some very strong and some light looked like paths we are presented with to choose at various conjunctions of life.

Day 3:

lepakshi

The above image is taken at Lepakshi temple, Anantpur, Andhra Pradesh during our recent Lepakshi trip. I could not get any straight shot of this famous monolithic seven hooded serpent and the shiva linga, as there were people and kids sitting on top of it. We were pressed for time leaving me no chances to wait for the stage to get cleared. This image was taken just few minutes earlier. During my initial scouting of images, I was not impressed with this, as there were kids running about, but on a different day, I considered them as a plus point for the image. I am not sure, whether this is a common trait in photographers, but my mood swings and mental state largely impact the choosing of the images, and also the final outcome of the post processing of the photos. Though I never planned to convert this to black and white, I was not being happy with the color processing of the photo on that day. The clouds were not that blue, and unfortunately, I missed this taking in RAW format, to recover the dark details later.

Day 4:

securityguard

Street photography is an upcoming style of photography commonly practised these days, along with the popular wedding photographer category. Most of the weekend photo walks happening in cities revolves round this style, though very few really understand them. Initially I thought about it as random shoots of people and things on the streets. But its much deeper than that. There are very good street photographers, who can convey lot of life contrast, stories and funny images from the streets. What I realized is that you need to have a sharp eye to lookout or anticipate for the images and also good knowledge on photography to compose the photos in a fraction of a second.

The above image was taken at Gandhi Bazar near Bull Temple, Basavanagudi, Bangalore. The positioning of the old security guard along with other mannequins provide a stark contrast to his value as a human being. Atleast that is what I thought so, when I clicked it.

Day 5:
The young man

In the month of Ramzan, we hit the streets of Frazer Town, Bangalore on one of the photowalks, and this was the only good image I could make from that walk. One of the popular images from my database, this photo has made it to the few photos to be exhibited in FOCUS Bangalore Annual Exhibition, on November 28th to December 2nd 2014 at Venkatappa Art Gallery.

Please drop by at the “Beyond Colors” Annual photography exhibition at Venkatappa Art Gallery, Kasturba Road, if you are in Bangalore. You can see lot many photographs from other talented photographers from Bangalore. And the entry is FREE!!

Photography milestones

Many weeks has passed since I wrote something here. I had so many things to write about, but when I started penning them down, the fear of judgement took over, and I scrapped the pages.
Another birthday had passed without much happenings, and I could have cribbed about it.
There are so many unfinished challenges which I started with high enthusiasm only to fizzle down.
I could write about the trips we made to Chikmagalur just like I wrote about Lepakshi. The architecture of Belur and Halebidu with the trek like experience at Mulayanagiri peak indeed deserves another post, which I hope to start off soon.
The writing month of November kept calling me to pick up the pen, but on some days, you just don’t feel to write.
So what do you do?
You either start writing crap or you wait for it to strike.
I waited long enough, and decided I would write now.

The urge to write this post came from the achievements which could be my milestones for this year.

Photography Exhibitions

This year, with the many goals I had in the beginning, a remarkable achievement is the progress in my photography. I still do not create masterpieces, but I am happy with my improvements.
I am able to use the manual mode, maybe at not all the times, but still under safe conditions.
I participated in many photowalks and met so many people. I realized, I am a people lover. Though I maybe making a fool of myself I came to understand that I am more true to myself, when I am surrounded with people.

One of my photos from the Ganeshas of Pottery Town had been selected for “Frames of my city” exhibition held at Thalam, Bangalore, as part of World photography day celebrations. The judge was Fawzan Hussain, a famous photojournalist from Mumbai. But unfortunately, when the exhibition was going on, I was down with fever, and other health problems. What to say on the (un)lucky stars!

And now, once again, 3 of my photos are selected for the annual photography exhibition by Focus Bangalore photography club for 2014. The exhibition, “Beyond Colors”, will be held at Venkatappa Art Gallery, Kasturba Road, Bangalore from November 28th to 2nd December 2014.

I hope luck stays with me this time, so that I can blog more about it! :).

See you soon.

Festive view memories

My birthday falls in October and I have very good memories of my childhood birthdays. Mostly, the festive season falls in October, either the Navratri or the Deepavali, and there would be grand preparations at my home. This includes decorating the living room since the pooja cupboard was in the same room. There would be twisted crepe papers hanging from the curtain rods and the across the fans to the corners. There would be mango leaves attached to the rope tied up across the room for this season. The pooja stand-cum-cupboard filled with decorative lights.

The view would be beautiful and colorful.

However hard you try to replicate, the joys of childhood and celebrating the festive season at your native home, has its own warmth which definitely fades over time, and ends up as pearls of memory, cherished deeply in some corner of our heart…
